Again, you might have seen these before, but the pattern is now available in English, so I'm sharing the mitten fun on my English blog too. Ravelry page here.

Red sweater redesign - a small tutorial

A sweater made more than twenty years ago - now with several stains.

I machine stitched and cut.

Zig-zag around the edges.

Picked up stitches for ribbing, around 2 sts every 3 rounds. K2, p2. Short rows for shaping around the neck. Four buttons holes.

Embroidery over the stains - and a bit more.

Fun with colours and stitches!

Stains gone!

Fake leather buttons.

Belt.

Et voilà! A new cardigan!

A fun project!

If you need embroidery and knitting inspiration, check out this blog.

Old sweater - new cardigan

I finally have an FO to show you! My new cardigan:

I made a red cabled sweater more than twenty years ago. After some years it got some stains on the sleeves, and on the upper front, so it has stayed in my closet for many years now. So I figured it was time to do something about it, and I cut away some of the stains, and covered others with embroidery.

And I'm very happy with the result. I just read a book, The Lacuna, by Barbara Kingsolver. The colours of this cardigan makes me think of Frida Kahlo (read the book if you haven't and you'll see what I mean!)

(More details about the making of the cardigan in a later post.)

Constitution Day Paparazzi

Lillehammer May 17th 2011 by Torirot
Lillehammer May 17th 2011, a photo by Torirot on Flickr.

17th of May is celebrated every year in Norway, and if you have a "bunad", you wear it today. There are many beautiful bunads, and here are some of the ones I saw in town today.

"Gammelfjøset" - The old cowshed

My favourite cafe in the woods of Lillehammer.

Today we had "Fastelavensboller" (Carnival buns, buns with whipped cream). On Wikipedia, you can read that Carnival in Denmark is called Fastelavn. In Norway too.

There's a very cosy and relaxed atmosphere.

To the left in this photo, there's an old tool on the wall.

I believe this one was used for treating flax, to make yarn.

(A "hekle" in Norwegian, heckling comb in English.)

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

And isn't this a beautiful wall hanging.

As far as I could see, it is woven, and then embroidered.

My grandmother's flowers

I love visiting my grand parents' old summer house.

My grandmother liked all sorts of fiber craft.

Lovely old flower fabrics.

There are always things to do at a summer house,so it's been a week of both work and relaxing.

And some knitting of course. More about that later.

Mexican colour and craft - and Twist collective's two weeks sweater challenge

I've decided to join Twist collective's two weeks sweater challenge (ravelink). I'm not going to make a whole sweater, but I intend to finish this one. It's my version of Paper dolls (ravelink).

I wrote about the pattern and discussed the colours in an earlier post. Let's say I've been inspired by Mexican colours - I'll make the birds yellow on purple background, and use red and green for the rest of the pattern - at least that's what I think today.

And here some Mexican colour and craft to brighten up your day!!

Constitution day

Nearly 200 years ago, the Norwegian constitution was signed on the 17th of May. The day is celebrated every year with children's parades. If you have a traditional costume, a so called bunad , you wear it on this day. Every district has its own bunad. Mine is from Gudbrandsdalen, where I live, but that is just a coincidence, really: My grandmother grew up in Oslo, but her family came from Vestfold. She didn't like the Vestfold bunad. And Oslo had no bunad of its own, the bunads beeing a rural tradition. She then chose to make herself a bunad from Gudbrandsdalen. And my parents chose to move here when I was little - and I was lucky to inherit this beautiful heirloom:

I would never have the pacience, or the skill, to embroider something like this. As I told you before, my grandmother was a very skilled crafter.
